Consumer Confidence Index

Business and Consumer Sentiment

The Consumer Confidence Index measures US consumers' attitudes toward current and expected future economic conditions, published monthly by the Conference Board, a nonprofit business research organization, from a survey of roughly 3,000 US households first conducted starting in 1967 and set to a base value of 100 in 1985. Because household spending decisions are shaped heavily by consumers' own sense of job security and income prospects, the index is closely watched as a leading indicator of future consumer spending, the largest single component of US GDP, though it is one of several such sentiment gauges alongside the separately compiled University of Michigan index.
