It was established on January 1, 2011 as the Monetary Authority of Brunei Darussalam, itself successor to the Brunei Currency Board founded in 1967, and took its current name in 2021; it is headquartered in the Ministry of Finance and Economy Building in Bandar Seri Begawan.
