The Central Bank of Sri Lanka was established August 28, 1950 under the Monetary Law Act No. 58 of 1949, replacing the earlier currency-board era Board of Commissioners of Currency of Ceylon. Headquartered in Colombo, it conducts monetary policy, issues and manages the Sri Lankan rupee, maintains financial system stability, and serves as banker and advisor to the government. Following the 2022 economic crisis, Sri Lanka replaced the bank's founding legislation with a new Central Bank Act in September 2023 that granted the institution significantly greater operational independence and split its governance between separate Governing and Monetary Policy Boards.
