The National Bank of Kazakhstan was formally established April 13, 1993, taking over central banking functions in the newly independent republic after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and its unified banking system. Headquartered in Astana, it is the sole issuer of the Kazakhstani tenge, reports to the president while retaining operational independence, and is governed by a nine member Management Board headed by a chairman and four vice chairmen. Wholly state owned, it also founded the Kazakhstan Deposit Insurance Fund in 1999 to backstop the country's banking system.
