The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan is Bhutan's central bank and currency-issuing authority, established legally on August 4, 1982 with operations beginning on April 1, 1983, and headquartered in the capital, Thimphu. Wholly state-owned and operating under the Royal Monetary Authority Act of 2010, it manages the Bhutanese ngultrum, the country's external reserves and foreign exchange operations, and regulates and supervises the nation's financial institutions.
