The Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran was established in August 1960 through the reorganization of central banking functions previously carried out by Bank Melli Iran. Headquartered in the CBI Tower, also known as the Bank Markazi Tower, in Tehran, it holds the exclusive right to issue Iran's banknotes and coinage, works to maintain the value of the Iranian rial, supervises banks and credit institutions, serves as custodian of the country's foreign exchange and gold reserves, and represents Iran at the International Monetary Fund.

The CBI was initially located in a modernist building on Ferdowsi Street, by then the financial district of Tehran with the head offices of Bank Melli Iran, Bank Sepah, Bank Rahni Iran, and Bank Bazargani. In 2005, it relocated to the Bank Markazi Tower, a larger and more modern in North Tehran.
