The National Bank of Georgia was first established December 31, 1919 as the state bank of the short-lived Democratic Republic of Georgia, and was re-established in 1991 after Georgia regained independence from the Soviet Union. Headquartered in Tbilisi, it holds the sole right to issue the Georgian lari, acts as banker and fiscal agent to the government, and is constitutionally charged with ensuring price stability. Its supreme governing body is a seven member council whose members are nominated by the president and elected by parliament to seven year terms.
