The Central Bank of Cyprus is the national central bank for the Republic of Cyprus within the Eurosystem, headquartered in Nicosia and established on December 14, 1963 as successor to the colonial-era Issuing Bank and its currency board system. It issued the Cypriot pound until 2007, and since Cyprus adopted the euro in 2008 most of its monetary functions have passed to the European Central Bank, leaving it as national competent authority for banking supervision and a participant in European Union financial oversight; it is wholly state-owned.
