Banco de Portugal

Banco de Portugal is Portugal's national central bank within the Eurosystem, headquartered in Lisbon and established by royal charter on November 19, 1846 under Queen Maria II through a merger of the Banco de Lisboa and the Companhia de Confianca Nacional. It issued the Portuguese escudo from 1846 until Portugal adopted the euro in 1999, after which many traditional central-banking functions passed to the European Central Bank; it continues as a financial supervisory authority, Portugal's national competent authority within European Banking Supervision, and the country's designated National Resolution Authority.
