The Bulgarian National Bank is Bulgaria's central bank, headquartered in Sofia and established on January 25, 1879, making it, by its own account, the thirteenth-oldest continuously existing central bank in the world. Wholly state-owned, it issued Bulgaria's former national currency, the lev, until the country adopted the euro on January 1, 2026, and it continues to issue banknotes and coins, safeguard currency reserves, and act as Bulgaria's national competent authority for European Banking Supervision, organized into Issue, Banking and Supervision departments.
