Central Bank of Iceland

Central Banks and Monetary Authorities

The Central Bank of Iceland was established on April 7, 1961 by act of the Althingi, spun out of the central banking division of Landsbanki Islands, which had held sole note-issuing rights on the island since 1927. Headquartered in Reykjavik, it holds the exclusive right to issue Icelandic krona notes and coins, manages the state's foreign currency reserves, and has pursued a floating exchange rate and inflation-targeting monetary policy since 2001, when it gained independence from a fixed peg. It is wholly state owned, led by a single governor supported by a seven member supervisory board elected by parliament, and absorbed the country's Financial Supervisory Authority on January 1, 2020.
