Central Bank of Ireland

Central Banks and Monetary Authorities

The Central Bank of Ireland is Ireland's national central bank within the Eurosystem, established on February 1, 1943 to replace the Currency Commission that had operated as a currency board since 1922. From 1943 until Ireland joined the euro in 1999 it controlled the country's monetary policy and issued the Irish pound, and it now implements European Central Bank policy while retaining Ireland's financial supervisory functions, serving as the state's national competent authority for European banking supervision and as its national resolution authority. Headquartered on North Wall Quay in Dublin since 2017, it also holds voting membership on the boards of the European Banking Authority, the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority, and the European Securities and Markets Authority.
