The Central Bank of Malta is the national central bank for Malta within the Eurosystem, headquartered at Binja Laparelli in Valletta in a building completed in 1924 as the Vernon Institute. Established on April 17, 1968 as successor to the Board of Commissioners of Currency of Malta, which had operated since 1940, it issued the Maltese lira from 1968 until Malta adopted the euro in 2007; it is wholly state-owned, holds reserves of about 400 million dollars, and participates in European banking supervision through the European Central Bank's Supervisory Board and the European Systemic Risk Board.
