The National Bank of Belgium is Belgium's central bank within the Eurosystem, established by law on 5 May 1850 under the sponsorship of the minister Walthere Frere-Orban and headquartered in Brussels. It is one of the few central banks in the world whose equity remains partly privately held, with the Belgian state owning half its shares while the remainder trade on Euronext Brussels. Since 2011 the bank has also served as Belgium's financial supervisory authority and the country's national competent authority for European banking supervision, and it oversees the payment institution SWIFT and operates the NBB-SSS central securities depository.
