The National Bank of Poland, Narodowy Bank Polski, is Poland's central bank, founded on January 15, 1945 by decree of the country's Provisional Government. Headquartered in Warsaw with branches in sixteen major Polish cities, it controls the issue of the Polish zloty, represents Poland within the European System of Central Banks despite the country's continued use of its own currency, and participates in the European Systemic Risk Board. The bank is wholly state owned and operates independently of the Ministry of Finance under Poland's 1997 constitution, with its president appointed by the Sejm for a six-year term.
