The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) is the primary financial services regulator of the Cayman Islands, established on January 1, 1997 as successor to the Cayman Islands Currency Board, which had operated since 1972 and had let the territory adopt its own currency, the Cayman Islands dollar, in place of the Jamaican dollar. Headquartered on Grand Cayman, it manages the currency board, regulates and supervises financial services, assists overseas regulatory authorities and advises the government on financial-services regulation.
