The Bank of Guyana is the central bank of Guyana, established in 1965 ahead of the country's 1966 independence and beginning operations that October 16; it is headquartered in the capital, Georgetown. Wholly state-owned, it holds the sole right to issue and redeem the Guyanese dollar, acts as banker to commercial banks, and serves as fiscal agent and banker to the government, holding foreign reserves of about 895 million dollars as of 2023.
