The Central Bank of Ecuador is the country's central bank, an institution within Ecuador's Executive Function, established on August 10, 1927 and headquartered in Quito with branches in Guayaquil and Cuenca. Wholly state-owned, it issued the Ecuadorian sucre until Ecuador adopted the United States dollar as legal tender in March 2000, after which its mission shifted to strengthening dollarization and guaranteeing technical autonomy; it manages the country's international reserves, reported at about 8.46 billion dollars as of December 2022, and provides payment systems and macroeconomic statistics under a Monetary Policy and Regulation Board that has served as its highest governing body since October 2021.
