The Central Bank of Suriname is Suriname's highest monetary authority, established on April 1, 1957 and headquartered on the Waterkant in the capital, Paramaribo. Wholly state-owned, it promotes the value and stability of the Surinamese dollar, oversees money circulation and banking and credit-union activity, and supports balanced economic development through three directorates covering banking operations, monetary and economic affairs, and supervision; it held foreign reserves of about 670 million dollars.
