Celso Furtado (1920-2004) was a Brazilian economist and one of the principal architects of structuralist economics alongside Raul Prebisch. His work examined the causes of underdevelopment and the persistence of poverty in peripheral economies, arguing that governments should intervene to stimulate industrialization rather than rely on market forces alone. He joined the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America in Santiago in 1949, published his best known book The Economic Growth of Brazil in 1959, founded the Brazilian government agency for developing the country's northeast, and served as Brazil's first Minister of Planning from 1962 to 1964. He went into exile after the 1964 military coup, teaching at Yale, Cambridge and the Sorbonne, before returning to Brazil in 1979 and later serving as Culture Minister.
