Kaname Akamatsu

O - Economic Development, Innovation, and Growth

Kaname Akamatsu (1896-1974) was a Japanese economist who developed the flying geese paradigm of economic development in the late 1930s, publishing the theory more widely in the Journal of Developing Economies in the 1960s. The model describes East Asian industrialization as a hierarchy in which the production of manufactured goods moves over time from more advanced economies to less advanced ones as each catches up in turn, with a nation's position in the hierarchy understood as unstable rather than fixed. The paradigm became an influential framework for analyzing the sequential industrialization of Japan and its neighbors. No dedicated English-language Wikipedia article exists for Akamatsu himself; this description is drawn from the Flying Geese Paradigm article and the History of Japanese Foreign Relations article, which is why it is shorter than this wave's other entries and why no separate biographical source entity is named.
