Mississippi Company

Historic Trading Companies and Banks

The chartered company popularly known as the Mississippi Company, formally titled John Law's Company, was founded in 1717 by the Scottish economist and financier John Law. It occupies a unique place in French and European monetary history, since it was for a brief period granted the entire revenue-raising capacity of the French state. It also absorbed every earlier French chartered colonial company, though under Law's leadership its overseas operations remained secondary to its domestic financial activity.
