Ostend Company

Historic Trading Companies and Banks

The Ostend Company was a chartered trading company established December 19, 1722 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, based in the Austrian Netherlands with headquarters in Antwerp and trading posts at Banquibazar in Bengal and Cabelon on the Coromandel Coast, founded with merchants Pieter de Potter and Thomas Ray. Between 1724 and 1732 it sent twenty-one vessels mainly to Canton and Bengal and imported roughly seven million pounds of tea from China between 1719 and 1728, rivaling the volumes of the British East India Company, but Charles VI suspended it in May 1727 under diplomatic pressure from Britain and the Dutch Republic as the price of securing recognition for his daughter Maria Theresa's succession, formally abolishing it under the Second Treaty of Vienna in March 1731 and winding it up in 1737.
