The Bank of Saint George was a financial institution of the Republic of Genoa, founded on 23 April 1407 to consolidate public debt that had been escalating because of war with Venice over trading and financial dominance. Its primary mission was to manage the San Giorgio shares, known as luoghi, from its headquarters at the Palazzo San Giorgio. It was one of the oldest chartered banks in Europe and in the world, and the Financial Times has called it the world's first modern public bank, in part for its innovative character.
