Multidimensional Poverty Index

Inequality and Development

The Multidimensional Poverty Index, or MPI, measures poverty using a range of indicators covering health, education and standard of living rather than income alone, applying the Alkire-Foster counting methodology to capture both the incidence and the intensity of poverty experienced by a population. It was developed in 2010 by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative together with the United Nations Development Programme, replacing the earlier Human Poverty Index, and the Global MPI is published annually by UNDP and OPHI alongside the Human Development Index. The Global MPI has been used to assess acute poverty across more than one hundred developing countries.
