African and Malagasy Union

International Monetary and Trade Organizations

The African and Malagasy Union was an intergovernmental organization promoting cooperation among newly independent, mostly francophone African states. It was founded on September 12, 1961, in Antananarivo by twelve states, Chad, Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, Dahomey, Gabon, Upper Volta, Mauritania, Niger, the Malagasy Republic, the Central African Republic, Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire, with Togo, Congo Kinshasa, Rwanda and Mauritius joining later. It originally aimed to adopt common stands on international issues and coordinate defense as well as promote economic and cultural cooperation, later narrowing to purely economic, social, technical and cultural objectives, before it dissolved on March 23, 1985. Its headquarters moved over its lifetime from Brazzaville to Yaounde and then Bangui.
