ACMECS, the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy, is a regional grouping of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar for political, economic and cultural cooperation. It grew out of a proposal by Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra at a special ASEAN summit on SARS in Bangkok in April 2003, and was formally established on November 12, 2003 when the initial four members adopted the Bagan Declaration, with Vietnam joining in May 2004. Its stated aim is to bridge the economic gap among its member countries and promote sustainable prosperity in the sub-region through self-help and partnership, including poverty reduction.
