The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is an intergovernmental political and economic union of 15 member states, 14 nation-states and one dependency, plus eight associate members across the Americas, the Caribbean and the Atlantic, established when four founding members signed the Treaty of Chaguaramas, which took effect August 1, 1973. Its secretariat is headquartered in Georgetown, Guyana, and it aims to promote economic integration and cooperation among members, ensure the benefits of integration are equitably shared, and coordinate foreign policy; it holds official observer status at the United Nations General Assembly. Carla Barnett of Belize serves as secretary-general, with Terrance Drew of Saint Kitts and Nevis chairing the organization.
