World Bank Group

Multilateral Development Banks and Institutions

The World Bank Group is a family of five international organizations that make leveraged loans to developing countries: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD, 1944), the International Finance Corporation (IFC, 1956), the International Development Association (IDA, 1960), the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID, 1965) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA, 1988). The term World Bank Group refers to all five institutions collectively; the narrower term World Bank refers specifically to just the IBRD and IDA, the two institutions that jointly issue development loans and grants to national governments.
