Japan's Ministry of Finance is a cabinet-level ministry of the Japanese government responsible for public finance, monetary affairs, taxation, customs, and financial administration, headquartered in the Kasumigaseki district of Tokyo. Known as the Okura-sho until a 2001 reorganization gave it its present name, the ministry traces its institutional origins to finance offices of the sixth century and was historically regarded as the most powerful ministry in the Japanese government, though it has lost some of its earlier supervisory authority since the 1990s; it today carries out its work through six main bureaus covering budgeting, tax policy, international finance, and customs.
