The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social, BNDES), commonly called the Brazilian Development Bank, is a federal public company associated with Brazil's Ministry of the Economy, established June 20, 1952 and headquartered in Rio de Janeiro. It ranks among the world's largest development banks, reporting total assets of about 272.1 billion US dollars in 2016, and provides long-term financing to strengthen the capital structure of private companies of all sizes, develop domestic capital markets, finance equipment trade and exports, and support investment in agriculture, education, health and infrastructure.
