China Investment Corporation (CIC) is a sovereign wealth fund that manages part of China's foreign exchange reserves, established in 2007 and initially capitalized with about 200 billion US dollars drawn from those reserves. It was created to deploy China's currency reserves into higher-risk, higher-return international investments rather than holding them in traditional government bonds, and it operates as a state-owned entity ultimately reporting to China's State Council. CIC manages assets valued in the trillions of dollars, investing across natural resources, technology, real estate and infrastructure worldwide, including support for initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative.
