Irish Fiscal Advisory Council

The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council, also known as the Fiscal Council, is a non departmental statutory body that provides independent assessments and analysis of the fiscal stance of the Irish government, its economic and budgetary forecasts, and its compliance with fiscal rules. It was established in July 2011 in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, as part of a wider budgetary reform recommended by the National Recovery Plan of Ireland and the Joint Committee on Finance, and made mandatory under the EU/IMF Programme of Financial Support for Ireland. Its creation reflected a broader international movement toward independent fiscal watchdog institutions meant to prevent future fiscal crises and improve transparency in public finances.
