Economic and Social Research Council

The Economic and Social Research Council, known as the ESRC, is a council of UK Research and Innovation and a non-departmental public body that funds research in the social sciences, established in 1965 as the Social Science Research Council and renamed in 1983 to reflect an expanded mandate beyond the traditional social sciences. Headquartered in Swindon, Wiltshire, it is the primary funding body of the United Kingdom for research into economic and social issues, with a mission spanning promotion of high quality research, development of national data infrastructure, training of social scientists and communication of social science to the public.
