The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) is a capacity-building research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, established in 1988 to inform economic policy making in sub-Saharan Africa. It grew out of a group of Africanist and African scholars who saw a disconnect between economic policy making and the region's own available research, and built a framework of donor-supported grants for researchers and resource-person economists working on themes important to African economic management. Beyond its original research-support mission, the consortium now also runs a postgraduate training programme and a publishing and communications arm.
