Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative

The Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) is an economic research centre within the Oxford Department of International Development at the University of Oxford, established in 2007. It develops systematic methodological and economic frameworks for understanding and reducing multidimensional poverty that go beyond income based measures, grounding its work in the capability approach developed by economist Amartya Sen. OPHI developed the Multidimensional Poverty Index used in the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Report starting in 2010, and continues to publish annual global poverty indices.
