Warsaw Stock Exchange

Stock Exchanges and Market Infrastructure

The Warsaw Stock Exchange traces its origin to the Warsaw Mercantile Exchange, founded May 12, 1817 by decree of Grand Duke Constantine Romanov and opened for trading four days later in the city's Old Town Hall; it was shut down during the Second World War and re-established in its present form on April 16, 1991, when its first trading session listed only five stocks. Headquartered since 2000 in the Exchange Center Building on Ksiazeca Street in Warsaw, it is the largest stock exchange in Central and Eastern Europe, trading shares, bonds, subscription rights and derivatives, and as of February 2026 listed 399 companies with a combined market capitalization of about 701.6 billion US dollars. Poland's State Treasury holds a 35 percent stake in the exchange, with the remainder held by private investors.
