The Bank of Botswana is the central bank of Botswana, established on July 1, 1975 after the country withdrew from the Rand Monetary Area, and headquartered in the capital, Gaborone. It manages monetary policy, issued the Botswana pula when it replaced the South African rand as legal tender on August 23, 1976, and manages the country's sovereign wealth fund, the Pula Fund; it held foreign reserves of about 7.39 billion dollars.
