The Bank of South Sudan is the central bank of the Republic of South Sudan, established by the Bank of South Sudan Act of 2011 following the country's independence that July, succeeding the Bank of Southern Sudan, a branch of the Bank of Sudan that had served as the region's monetary authority since February 2005. Headquartered in Juba, it is wholly state-owned and is the only institution constitutionally mandated to issue the South Sudanese pound, in addition to supervising banking services, licensing financial institutions, and acting as banker to the government.
