The Central Bank of Egypt was founded in January 1961, succeeding the National Bank of Egypt, which had carried out central banking functions until 1960. Headquartered in Cairo, it regulates Egypt's banks and banking system, formulates and implements the country's banking, monetary and credit policy, issues banknotes, manages the country's gold and foreign exchange reserves, supervises the national payments system, and manages Egypt's public and private external debt.
