Banco de Cabo Verde is Cabo Verde's central bank, established on September 29, 1975 by nationalizing the operations of the Portuguese colonial-era Banco Nacional Ultramarino, which had operated in the islands since 1865, and headquartered on Avenida Amilcar Cabral in the capital, Praia. Wholly state-owned, it issues and manages the Cape Verdean escudo, holding foreign currency reserves of about 490 million dollars; in 1993 its commercial banking functions were separated into a distinct entity, Banco Comercial do Atlantico.
