The Bank of Eritrea is the central bank of Eritrea, tracing its establishment to 1914 and headquartered in the capital, Asmara. Wholly state-owned, it issues Eritrea's official currency, the nakfa, in which all domestic transactions must be conducted, and it works to encourage foreign investment and facilitate the import of capital goods such as industrial machinery and agricultural equipment, coordinating monetary policy with the Ministry of Finance while operating independently of it.
