The Reserve Bank of Malawi was established in 1964 and is headquartered in Lilongwe. It is the only institution permitted to issue the Malawian kwacha, which replaced the Malawian pound in 1971, and the bank was among the original seventeen regulatory institutions to commit to financial inclusion under the 2011 Maya Declaration.

The Reserve Bank of Malawi was established under an Act of Parliament in July 1964 (Chapter 44:02 Laws of Malawi) and started its operations in June, 1965 in Blantyre.
