The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe traces its founding to the Reserve Bank of Rhodesia, established May 22, 1964, itself successor to the Bank of Rhodesia and Nyasaland which had operated from 1956 until the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland collapsed in 1963; the bank took its present name at Zimbabwean independence in 1980. Headquartered in the New Reserve Bank Tower in Harare, it is wholly state owned and is responsible for setting monetary policy, serving as sole issuer of the country's banknotes and coins, regulating the money supply, safeguarding the nation's gold reserves, including through its subsidiary Fidelity Printers and Refinery which purchases and refines precious minerals, providing daily banking services to the government, and promoting financial inclusion.
