The Central Bank of West African States is the supranational central bank of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, serving the eight countries, Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo, that share the West African CFA franc. Established in 1959 as successor to colonial-era institutions including the Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale, it moved its head office from Paris to Dakar, Senegal in 1978 and was formally inaugurated there in 1979. Beyond issuing the shared currency, the bank pursues financial-inclusion initiatives across its member states and belongs to the international Alliance for Financial Inclusion.

In 1955, the French government transferred the note-issuance privilege for its West African colonies, hitherto held by the Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale, to a newly created entity based in Paris, the Institut d'émission de l'Afrique occidentale française et du Togo. In 1959, the latter's name was changed to BCEAO.

It remained headquartered in Paris until mid-1978, when its head office was relocated to Dakar. The Dakar headquarters was formally inaugurated on 26 May 1979.
