The Asia-Africa Growth Corridor is an economic cooperation initiative between India and Japan, launched together with African partners on May 25, 2017, at an African Development Bank meeting in Gujarat, India. It aims to develop quality infrastructure in Africa alongside digital connectivity and support a free and open Indo-Pacific region, prioritizing health and pharmaceuticals, agriculture and agro-processing, disaster management and skill development. Unlike the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, it is conceived primarily as a maritime corridor reviving historic sea routes between African ports such as Djibouti, Mombasa and Zanzibar and Asian ports such as Jamnagar, Kolkata and Sittwe.
