The Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle, known as IMT-GT, is a subregional economic cooperation program launched in 1993 by Indonesian President Suharto, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, and Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai as an early attempt at economic liberalization and integration within ASEAN. It links 32 less-developed provinces and states across the three countries, covering southern Thailand, northern Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatra, with a combined population exceeding 54 million. A Joint Business Council was added in 1995 to draw the private sector into the program's cross-border trade and investment goals.
