The Union State is a supranational union of Belarus and Russia, established with the stated aim of deepening the relationship between the two countries through integration in economic and defence policy. It originally set out to build a full federation, but Belarus and Russia have both kept their independence, so in practice the Union State displays the features of a confederation rather than a single merged state.
