Ease of doing business index

Government and Fiscal

The ease of doing business index was an economic indicator developed by Simeon Djankov, Michael Klein, and Caralee McLiesh at the World Bank Group to quantify how easy or difficult it is to operate a business in a given country. A higher ranking, corresponding to a lower numerical score, indicated simpler business regulations and stronger protection of property rights. The World Bank published the underlying annual Doing Business Report from 2003 to 2019, covering 190 countries and measuring ten areas such as starting a business, getting electricity, registering property, paying taxes, and enforcing contracts. The report was discontinued in September 2021 after an internal audit found that bank leadership had pressured staff to manipulate the 2018 and 2020 results, and the World Bank later replaced it with a new methodology called Business Ready.
