Economic Freedom of the World is an annual survey published by the Fraser Institute, a Canadian think tank, that attempts to measure the degree of economic freedom among the nations of the world. The index scores each country on five equally weighted areas: the size of government, measured through expenditures, taxes, and state enterprises; the security of property rights; access to sound money; freedom to trade internationally; and the regulation of credit, labor, and business, drawing on 42 distinct variables from sources such as the World Bank. The project rests on four founding principles: personal choice over collective choice, voluntary exchange coordinated by markets rather than political allocation, freedom to enter and compete in markets, and protection of people and their property from aggression by others.
